As a gweilo here in china I am constantly being asked,” which city do you like the best?” well honestly I do not like any city, but there is where the money is and if you are one of those people who is not lucky or born rich then you have to work to survive and save enough to go out into the countryside and hide.
I have traveled the world and the seven seas, seen too many cities and many nice people, most say that there is: the prettiest, the cleanest, the best for food , the oldest, the richest, ect. All these things one wants in the place you call home. Well believe it or not, I think that Guangzhou is the bee’s knees, sure it is not perfect, but then if it was, everyone would come here and then like so many other great places I have seen and are no more.
What do I see in GZ? First and foremost is the revolutionary spirit. In the last 5 years I have witnessed a complete change from a dirty, stinking, soulless metropolis that reminded me more of London during the industrial revolution or Mexico City instead of a place I would want to be. The skies were gray and smell all day; you could see the air in the streetlights at night. Doing business was terrible too, credit cards and checks were some foreign scam and one always had to have a translator. If you wanted to see an English movie, eat some good western food, see a doctor, go to a concern or art exhibition, you had to go to hongkong.
Newcomers to GZ would think I am lying, as the present day GZ is a far cry from what we had to put up with just 5 years ago. These changes have been monumental, Swift, well planed and executed. The quality of the air has improved dramatically, why I can see blue skies and blue stars again and I don’t have to leave the city. I doubt if Mao would swim in the pearl just now, but every year local authorities are building more water treatment plants and enforcing their anti-pollution laws. What the local government has done to unlock the urban gridlock is truly amazing. The most modern subway in the world, a brand now ring road, rebuilding and designing all the precious congestion spots and last but not least, traffic lights and signs! 5 years ago there was all of 2 traffic lights here.
All this in turn makes lige here much better when you want to go around the city and sample some of the many new and old sight to see. You cannot count all the new restaurants, bars and clubs that have sprung up. No longer is the hard rock cafe the only place in town with a good band. The xinghai concert hall is not only one of the best in the world, but musicians from all over the world come here to play. The same can be said for its neighbor, the Guangdong art museum, a masterpiece of architecture with exhibits from all over the world. It could easily be world class, if they were at lease use pinyin on title cards of the works of art.
When I see all the things you can use with smart cards and credit cards makes me smile remembering when I first tired to use my visa card here, they though that it was a very nice name card! I no longer need a neither translator nor picture menu to order or get around town as there are English menus, signs and speakers everywhere these days. There are now English language newspapers, magazines, TV&radio programs. But alas no playboy, yet. Sometimes I am better understood in English than when I try speaking putongua here. All the young, up and coming business people speak English which makes doing business all that easier for us Gwielos.
No need to go to HK anymore, the same films get shown here and the profusion of live music here has HongKongers coming here to be entertained. Western fast food is here with vengeance, howevre fine western dining still is in a void. Getting ill is always a pain, but now we have several modern clinics and hospitals that cater for foreigners.
Housing has exploded on the scene with prices plummeting to reasonable levels. Still need some work on interior design and layout, but as I mentioned before, the revolutionary spirit and the ability to adopt is one of the reasons I know GZ is home.
So now when I get popped the perpetual question, I don’t tell them GZ, I usually say shanghai or Beijing as I don’t want all those people coning here and messing up my paradise again.

作为一名“鬼佬”，我经常被问这样一个问题：“你最喜欢哪个城市？”老实说，我没有特别喜欢哪个城市，但是，城市毕竟是可以赚大钱的地方，而且如果你属于那种运气不够好的人，或者生在穷苦之家，你则必须努力工作以求生存，攒到足够的钱，然后回乡村隐居。
我曾经漂洋过海，见识了很多城市，也认识了很多友善的人。大部分人会说，最美丽的，最干净的，食物最棒的，最古老的，最富裕的地方就可以是我们称之为家的地方。不管你信不信，我认为广州是个很不错的地方。当然它并不是完美无暇的，但是如果完美至极的话，到时人人都会来这儿，那么和我到过的其他地方就没什么两样了。
我在广州看到些什么呢？首先最为重要的是革新精神。在过去的五年里，我亲眼见证了一个曾经脏乱毫无生气的城市巨变的过程，以前的广州使我不禁想起工业革命时期的伦敦或者墨西哥城，那并不是我想要的地方。在过去，空气污浊，臭气熏天。夜晚时分在路灯的照射下你能看到雾气流动。在广州生意也不好做，而且还必须找个翻译解决信用卡和支票兑换的问题。如果你想看一部英文电影，吃西餐，看医生，看演唱会或参观艺术展览，那就只好去香港了。
刚来广州的人可能会认为我在说谎，因为现今的广州已经不再是五年前那个难以忍受的城市了。这些变化已成为一个里程碑，快速计划并且实施了。空气质量发生了巨大的改善，这就是我之所以能够再次看见蔚蓝色的天空和明亮的星星而留在这个城市的原因。我很怀疑毛主席还健在的话会否在珠江游泳，但是每一年，当地的政府建立了更多的净水厂，实施反污染的法律法规。当地政府在舒缓交通阻塞方面所做的努力真的令人惊叹。他们建立了世界上最现代化的地铁、全新的内环路，设计重建了所有重点交通要塞，此外，还完善了交通灯和指示牌等基础交通设施。而在五年前，这里只有两个交通指挥灯。
当你在广州城四处走走，对比一些新旧景观时，会发现这些变化使在广州的生活变得越来越好。数不清的饭馆、酒吧和俱乐部像雨后春笋般涌现。Hard Rock Café不再是城里唯一一家拥有优秀乐队的夜店。星海音乐城则跻身世界前列，吸引了来自世界各地的音乐家在这里举行表演。而坐落在旁边的广东美术馆同样是建筑界的杰作，展出的物品来自世界各地。如果他们在艺术作品的标题卡片上用拼音标注的话，就更具世界级水平了。
当我看到现在使用信用卡或其他的卡片如此方便时，我的内心会异常开心，并想起我在这第一次试图使用Vis卡结账时，竟然有人认为那是一张精致的名片！现在我再也不需要一个翻译或者配图的菜单来点菜，现在这里到处都有英文菜单、标志和会说英语的人。这里还有英文报纸、杂志、电视或电台节目，但可惜的是还没有花花公子杂志。有时候我讲英文比我讲普通话更容易被人理解。所有年轻一代的商业人士都会说英语，使得我们这些外国佬和他们做起生意来更加方便。
我再也不需要跑到香港去了，在广州同样的电影也会上演,充满生机活力的音乐会反倒吸引了很多香港人过来。西式快餐完全进军广州，可惜还不能品尝到正宗精美的西餐。生病是件痛苦的事，这儿有几所现代化的诊所和医院，专门服务外国人。
广州的住房价格和质量成正比，但内部的设计和规划还需改进。不过正如我前面提到的，广州人都有一种革命的创新精神和适应能力，这就是我把广州作为我的家的原因之一。
所以，当我再次碰到别人问我喜欢哪个城市的问题时，我通常都说上海或者北京，而不说广州，因为我不想所有的人都挤到广州来，我怕他们会破坏我心中的天堂。

项目陈述：
为改变康复者面对的这种状况，汉达院村综合康复项目工作人员计划为有需要的康复者发放轮椅和拐杖等辅助器具，以使得康复者能够更好的照顾自己，同时，工作人员会根据评估为身体机能退化的康复者发放不同类型的辅助器具，以降低康复者摔倒跌伤的可能性。
汉达康福协会从2000年起在广东的康复村开展残疾预防和护理工作。通过9年多的工作，我们积累了一定的经验和技术，为康复者解决了许多实际困难，也得到了康复者的好评。现在我们将制定下一年的计划，此计划将会延续关注康复者面临的生活问题，直接令住在广东省内37个康复村中有需要的麻风康复者受惠。汉达院村综合康复项目工作人员计划对广东省内37个康复村进行定期随访，每年每个康复村将进行2-3次随访，在随访过程中评估康复者的状况而开展工作。
项目周期：2009年7月1日—2010年6月30日
我们将计划初步从以下几个方面开展工作：
1. 为身体残疾、无法行走的康复者提供轮椅，促使康复者可以自理
2. 为身体机能老化的康复者发放拐杖、单拐、助行器等器具，方便康复者日常生活，预防 跌倒摔伤影响康复者生活等事件发生的几率。
3. 根据康复者需求提供特适当的辅助器具：滑板车、助行器等
此计划将从生理上、心理上为康复者带来积极影响。
1. 辅助器具的发放，使残疾的康复者可以独自照顾自己，使自己的生活变得更好，同时也使一些康复者避免因意外事件导致残疾的可能性。
2. 能够安全的照顾自己，同时减少产生意外的担心，使康复者在生活中能够保持心情愉快。
3. 辅助器具的发放，使康复者感受到来自社会的爱心和关怀，能够使他们的自信心增强，更加开心的度过晚年。

Project Statement:
To change this situation, the working staff in HANDA Village Integrating Rehabilitation & Welfare Project gave out assistive devices such as wheel chairs and crutches to villagers in need, enabling them to take better care of themselves. Meanwhile, according to assessment, the working staff distributed different types of assistive devices to villagers with deteriorating health to reduce the likelihood of falling down.
HANDA Rehabilitation & Welfare Association has carried out prevention and nursing work in Leprosy rehab village in Guangdong since 2000. Through nine years’ work, we have accumulated certain experience and techniques, solved many practical difficulties for people affected by leprosy, and won high appreciation among the villagers. Now we are making the plan for next year. This plan will continue paying close attention to villagers’ problems concerning their life, benefiting villagers in need from 37 leprosy rehab villages in Guangdong Province. The working staff in HANDA Village Integrating Rehabilitation & Welfare Project plan to follow up 37 leprosy rehab villages in Guangdong Province regularly, with each village visited twice or three times every year. During the process of following up the villages, the work will be carried out with accessing villagers’ condition.
Project Cycle: July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.
We are planning to carry out the work in the following respects:
1. Provide wheel chairs for villagers who are disabled and unable to walk to encourage them to take care of themselves.
2. Provide crutches, single crutches, walking aids to villagers with deteriorating health to make their daily life convenient and prevent events such as falling down and getting hurt from happening.
3. Provide proper assistive devices such as scooters and working aids according to villagers’ requirement.
This plan will bring positive effects to villagers physiologically and mentally.
1. The distribution of assistive devices enables the villagers to look after themselves independently and live a better life. At the same time, it will lessen the chance for the villagers to become disabled because of accidents.
2. The villagers can look after themselves safely and limit worry about accidents, thus maintaining a happy mood in life.
3. The distribution of assistive devices make the villagers feel love and care from the society. This can strengthen their confidence and make them happier to spend their declining years.
