The Internet “UN Charter” At the beginning of the establishment of ARPA sponsored by US Department of Defense, most of the computers were not compatible to each other. It’s totally impossible to connect computers produced by different manufacturers with network. So how to connect computers produced by different manufacturers? There must be one agreement to regulate the network. Two American computer expert, Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn together developed “Transfer Control Protocol”(TCP) and “Internet Protocol”(IP). These two protocols served as the Internet “UN Charter”. They are the most basic foundation and framework for Internet at present. To develop this protocol, they worked so hard that they couldn’t go to sleep at night. Just as what they said, “We only have a short break to stretch our necks when the other is busy typewriting. And we have to think together just like two hands tied up to one pen.” Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn were both entitled “Father of Internet” and acquired Turing Award which was called the Nobel Prize in computer science. Science serves the interests of the whole human beings that transcends borders and makes the world unbounded.
What God Hath Wrought! The first telegraph message in the history of mankind “What God Hath Wrought”, sent by Samuel F.B. Morse on May 24th, 1884 from Washington to Baltimore greatly changed the world. In 1832, when American painter Morse went on his study journey in Europe, he was inspired by the new technology which used electricity as information carrier. He then started his study on how to combine electricity carrier and human language. Finally, he successfully took advantage of electricity by way of “connected”, “unconnected” and “long unconnected” to transmit information. This technique replaced the complicated word transmission and this was the well-known “Morse Code”. It was the first code in the history of telecommunication and provided the basic method for modern telecommunication. Actually God cannot create wonders but the persistent and unremitting probing spirit of human beings which is changing the world.
The origin of Paper Making Technique It was in Eastern Han Dynasty (202 B.C.-8 A.D.) when there was an Empress Deng who was fond of writing and composing. At that time, Cai Lun, the manager general of the royal workshop, was responsible for making all the table wares used in the royal palace. He studied and absorbed his predecessors’ experience and put them into practice again and again. Finally, in 105 AD, he made the easy writing high-quality paper and submitted to the emperor. The Emperor He of Han highly approved of it and mandated the whole nation to use this paper. Before the invention of Paper Making Technique, people used to record things by curving them on oracle bones, bamboo slips and silk pieces. But the oracle bones and bamboo slips were too heavy, while silk was just too expensive. Knowing this, Cai Lun made his paper out of tree barks, broken linen cloth, fishnets and other planting materials. Through a series of technological procedures, the quality of paper was highly enhanced. From then on, paper became the most important carrier used to record human history. Repeating practice and keeping exploration is the basic method for our ancestors' invention.
Mr. Butler W.Lampson, It’s known to all that you’re such a renowned computer scientist and the winner of Turing Award in 1992. So I guess you must have known of the International Olympiad in Informatics. (Abbreviated to IOI) Initiated by the UNESCO, IOI is a significant international contest in the field of computer science, with all the secondary school competitors aged below 20. Its aim is to popularize computer science among the young people of the whole world and to provide them with an opportunity to exchange ideas. IOI 2008 was held in Cairo in the August of this year. 300 competitors from 86 countries participated in the contest. Among them, four Chinese competitors distinguished themselves in the contest with three gold medals and one silver medal. Could you write down some encouraging compliments to them from which I think they’ll benefit in future life of their study and work? Information run through human-beings’ life, cultivate human-beings’ development, and bring together human-beings’ civilization! Spread scientific and technological innovations, popularize information science, and advocate Nobel scientific spirit!
