Can Vitamin C see off your wrinkles
Over recent years, a glance at the ingredients on the back of my face cream has left me wishing I’d done a PhD in chemistry — all those AHAs, nanoparticles and pentapeptides. But some good news from the beauty world is that the latest wonder ingredient is something we all know and love. Good old vitamin C. Look down the beauty aisle of any department store and you’ll see three new products from Origins, Kiehl’s and StriVectin-EV, which feature the old favourite as their key ingredient. Other brands such as Sisley, Vichy, Environ and Philosophy also have vitamin C-based formulas. The beauty industry has long known that vitamin C — in food and cream form — is vital for good skin. The nutrient helps form collagen and elastin (essential to keep the skin looking plump, taut and young) as well as acting as an antioxidant to protect us from the harsh effects of the environment, such as UV rays, pollution and a bad diet. In recent years, lowly vitamin C has been left in the shadows as cosmetic companies embarked on a rush to find new (often unpronouncable) ingredients — the likes of acai, glycans and hyaluronic acid. ‘Yet new technology means we can harness vitamin C in new, more targeted ways — specifically in terms of tackling fine lines and pigmentation,’ says Gillian Barclay from Kiehl’s. Indeed, dermatologists have discovered that vitamin C is one of the best ingredients to tackle dark spots. It not only brightens the skin but also inhibits the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme that creates pigmentation. Scientists have also found that vitamin C is not only an essential building block of skin-plumping collagen and elastin, but it actually kick-starts the body into producing more of these proteins — making it a potent anti-ager. The problem in the past has been that it’s hard to use vitamin C at doses high enough to make a difference because it had a tendency to oxidise — in other words, go off and stop working — after contact with air. The new generation of vitamin C products have overcome this problem. In their Clearly Corrective Dark Spots Solution (£36), Kiehl’s use a new faster acting version of vitamin C — called Activated C — which is easier for the skin to absorb. It is also ‘photo stable’, meaning it doesn’t stop working the moment it is exposed to air and sunlight. Meanwhile, Origins’ new skin-brightener, Mega-Bright (£46), uses a rose called Rosa Roxburghii, which is dubbed ‘the king of vitamin C’ and has been part of traditional medicine for centuries. Clinique’s latest anti-ager, Repairwear Uplifting Firming Cream (£50), also contains vitamin C in a very potent form. Would a daily vitamin pill do the job just as well? Not according to dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting, who says: ‘Studies show we can’t increase the amount of vitamin C in our skin simply through diet. Sunlight and pollution deplete the skin’s vitamin C supply, so it makes sense to deliver it topically.’ But Dr Bunting warns that not all vitamin C creams are equal. ‘I would recommend a serum that contains at least 10 per cent vitamin C, such as Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum (£85), and make sure it hasn’t discoloured — a sign that it has become oxidised and is no longer effective. Store it away from the light for maximum longevity.’ Other products with high levels of vitamin C (which appears on labels as L-Ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate or ascorbyl phosphate) include Environ’s C Boost (£28), Dr Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester Eye Serum (£46.50) and Alpha-H Vital C 20 (with 20 per cent vitamin C) with olive leaf extract (£45.20). L’Occitane Immortelle Brightening Moisture Cream (£36) is a great everyday moisturiser; as is Vichy Normaderm Anti-Age (£15). StriVectin-EV Get Even Spot Repair (£45) is great for targeting specific dark spots. If your s kin is sensitive, experts warn you may experience stinging or irritation with products containing the water-soluble form of vitamin C, called L-Ascorbic acid, so do a patch test first. But for most of us it seems our skin would benefit from a vitamin boost.
Who’s Got the Best April Fool’s Pranks
April 1, 2011, 1:30 pm Ah, it’s April Fool’s Day. You’d think the Web world would run out of clever ideas for pranks after all these years, but no such worries; the 2011 assortment is hilarious. * YouTube has “Top 5 Viral Pictures of 1911.” The fake video includes grainy, black-and-white “films” from 100 years ago. YouTube veterans will easily recognize that they’re parodies of the “Bed Intruder Song,” the Annoying Orange and other modern-day viral videos. * Google is introducing Gmail Motion. “Now you can control Gmail with your body!” Mock videos round out the deal. (Also try Googling “Helvetica.”) * Hulu has gone back in time, too, hilariously. The home page — in fonts, layout, and video offerings — has mysteriously gone back to 1996. “No, it’s not just a bad dream. Banks could start charging fees on ATM withdrawals any day now,” says the “Good Morning America” episode description. Episodes available for viewing include “NewsRadio,” “Chicago Hope” and “Highlander.” * There’s a truly eye-opening “deal” available on LivingSocial.com (a rival to Groupon): Spa-Lami, the “first meat-themed med-spa.” (Sample: “A prosciutto neck wrap and ground beef compress come next, followed by a soothing gravy-aroma therapy treatment (in beef or turkey) and Swedish meatball massage.”) * ThinkGeek.com is “offering” some truly inspired bogus products, including the Apple Store Playmobil Set (you HAVE to watch the video), Angry Birds Pork Rinds and Star Wars Lightsaber Popsicles. * LinkedIn.com, under “People You May Know,” lists Albert Einstein, J.R.R. Tolkien, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, and other people you may know. Incredibly, you can actually click their names to read their profiles. * Even earnest Whole Foods is in on the April Fool’s action, featuring “Insects Raised With Compassion,” “Save Money with Refurbished Spices,” and a new option to “have your whole paycheck automatically converted to a Whole Foods Market gift card.” (Clearly, Whole Foods has heard that some of its customers refer to it as “Whole Paycheck.”) * Kodak’s Web designers went into overdrive creating a Web site for a new fantasy service called Relationshiffft: Automated Person Purge. “An app to instantly remove that certain someone from all your photos and videos, no matter where they’re posted!” Hilarious. * Funnyordie.com has turned into “Friday or Die,” and is nothing but Rebecca Black videos. (Last year, its April Fool prank was all Justin Bieber — but Rebecca Black is even cheesier, and therefore funnier.) The segment from “Betwixt the Music” is screamingly funny. * WestJet’s site says that it’s introducing a “state-of-the-art money-saving feature.” Helium mixed in ventilation system lightens the load.” * On the Tumblr staff blog, they’re letting us know about an insidious threat: running out of blog-post ID’s. The solution? To put a little snowman character in front of each ID number, so the numeric sequence can begin again… * “Ryanair, the world’s favorite airline, today announced that it will introduce ‘Child Free’ flights from October (winter schedule) after a Europe-wide survey of 1,000 passengers showed that half would pay higher fares to avoid other people’s children.” * Virgin’s getting in the act, too. Check out the press release: “Branson buys Pluto, reinstates as planet.” * Toshiba’s got an announcement to make, too: “Meet the world’s first 3D monocle.” (“You’ll experience one-eyed 3D so real, you’d think you were using both eyes!”) * Somebody on eBay is selling “nothing.” Starting bid is $1. * On The Huffington Post, the parody of The Times’s new digital subscription plan is either hilarious or vicious, depending on whether or not you work for The Times. (“On HuffingtonPost.com you can view the first 6 letters of each word at no charge (including slideshows of adorable kittens). After 6 letters, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber.”) If these sites don’t make you laugh, then see your doctor. You may be suffering from Humor Deficit Disorder (HDD).
In Honor of Mother
In Honor of Mother's Day, I searched the web and selected the 11 best quotes about mothers. Psychological attachment theories suggest that the child's relationship with the parents forms the basis for adult relationships. The majority of children form secure attachments which allow them to use the parent as a safe haven from which to go out and explore the world. This results in adult attachment styles characterized by trust that others will be responsive to one's needs for nurturance, and trust in the self to safely negotiate relationships and challenges. If the attachment bond is disrupted by parental abandonment, abuse, inconsistent attachment or neglect, individuals may develop avoidant, anxious, or ambivalent attachment, characterized by a lack of consistent trust in self to function independently and/or in others to freely love and care for us. 1. The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. ~Rajneesh 2. God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. ~Jewish Proverb 3. “Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers, and sisters, aunts and cousins, but only one mother in the whole world.” -Kate Douglas Wiggin 4. “There is no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one” - Jill Churchill 5. Mother's love is peace. It need not be acquired, it need not be deserved. - Erich Fromm, psychologist 6. “A mother understands what a child does not say.” -Jewish proverb 7. "Woman knows what man has long forgotten, that the ultimate economic and spiritual unit of any civilization is still the family. -Clare Boothe Luce 8. “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” -Washington Irving 9. “When you were small and just a touch away, I covered you with blankets against the cold night air. But now that you are tall and out of reach, I fold my hands and cover you with prayer. ~ Dona Maddux Cooper 10. 'The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.' ~ Honore de Balzac 11. 'A mighty power and stronger Man from his throne has hurled, for the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.'~ William Ross Wallace These quotes celebrate our culture's view on the love of a mother for her child, which is seen as unselfish, unconditional, intuitive, unique, forgiving, & everlasting. The mother is also seen as wise and powerful, protecting and caring for her family. While not everybody is lucky enough to have this type of mother, these images are cultural ideals, designed to inspire women to be the best mothers they can be. Perfection is not necessary, however. Since the majority of children develop secure attachments, It is sufficient to be a good, or "good enough" mother in order to cement the attachment bond.
