I’ve reached the top of Mount Tai and Mount Lu, traveled around Wuyi Mountain and been to Yandang Mountain. In comparison with these four mountains, I always feel that Huangshan has a unique feature to recommend itself. Just as people often say, Huangshan alone claims the magnificence of Mount Tai and the elegance and grace of Wuyi Mountain. It also boasts the flying waterfalls of Mount Lu as well as the rugged peaks and rocks of Yandang Mountain…Huangshan is picturesque all the year round. In spring, various kinds of exotic flowers bloom and vie with each other in beauty. Butterflies fly in and out of the flowering shrubs with hundreds of birds singing happily. Being in such beautiful scenes, one would become so intoxicated as to forget the way back. In summer, you can see shades everywhere formed by green trees and streams floating across green valleys. Thunderstorms often occur suddenly, producing waterfalls hanging down from high above with noises as loud as dragon sound. In autumn, tree leaves all turn golden, but birds would still sing happily among colorful flowers as if they were in spring again. In winter, everything is under the cover of heavy snows. Mountain peaks, rocks, pines and grass, assuming the contour of fine jades when combined together, would form a spectacular scene. The pines, rocks, clouds and springs there, which are even more spectacular and rare, are regarded as the “Four Wonders” of Huangshan. Pines are one of the scenic wonders of Huangshan. Their needle-like leaves are short and thick. With twisted trunks, curling branches and treetops as flat as cut away with scissors, the pines impress people with emerald green and uniqueness. They either stand majestically erect, or hang upside-down on steep cliffs, or tower at the top of mountain peaks. Some of them are like eagles fluttering wings to soar high, some like warriors armed all over with amours, others like umbrellas with flat tops, still others like swords with pointed tips. All are vigorous and exquisite, assuming multifarious appearances. Qian Qianyi, a literary giant in Ming Dynasty, wrote in his article A Tour to Huangshan, “The Trees in Huangshan are nothing but pine trees. And every pine tree presents an extraordinary sight.” In fact, Huangshan truly deserves the praise.
An Insider Views China, Past and Future
It’s been four decades since President Richard M. Nixon sent Henry A. Kissinger to Beijing to re-establish contact with China, an ancient civilization with which the United States, at that point, had had no high-level diplomatic contact for more than two decades. Since then the cold war has ended; the Soviet Union (a threat to both China and the United States and a spur to Sino-American cooperation) has come unwound; and economic reform in China has transformed a poverty-ridden, poorly educated nation into a great power that is playing an increasingly pivotal role in the globalized world. Mr. Kissinger’s fascinating, shrewd and sometimes perverse new book, “On China,” not only addresses the central role he played in Nixon’s opening to China but also tries to show how the history of China, both ancient and more recent, has shaped its foreign policy and attitudes toward the West. The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns in Chinese history (its cycles of turning inward in isolationist defensiveness and outward to the broader world), even as it explicates the philosophical differences that separate it from the United States. Each country has a sense of manifest destiny, but “American exceptionalism is missionary,” Mr. Kissinger says. “It holds that the United States has an obligation to spread its values to every part of the world.” China’s exceptionalism, in contrast, he says, is cultural: China does not proselytize or claim that its institutions “are relevant outside China,” yet it tends to grade “all other states as various levels of tributaries based on their approximation to Chinese cultural and political forms.”
