Taiwanese films had not found their own identities until the middle of 1980s. Before that, there was nearly no Taiwanese film, for Taiwan was occupied by Japan for almost half a century then ruled by ROC government. Due to the strict censorship it was nearly impossible to describe Taiwan and Taiwan people with films. As for Taiwan people, they also could not “truly see and know themselves”. In the late 1980s, “New Film Movement” rised in Taiwan. Those initiators contributed to chasing and characterizing Taiwan’s status and history, fousing on full-bodied urban ecology and the new generation.
