有这么一个故事：长者带领村民日夜兼程，要把盐运送到某地换成大麦过冬。有一天晚上，他们露宿于荒野，星空灿烂。长者依然用世代祖先传下来的方法，取出3粒盐块投入营火，占卜山间天气的变化……过了片刻，长者神情严肃，因为盐块在火中毫无声息。他认为不吉，主张天亮后马上赶路。但族中另一位年轻人认为，“以盐窥天”是迷信，反对匆忙赶路。第二天下午，果然天气骤变，风雪交加，坚持晚上走的年轻人这才领悟长者的睿智。
年轻人往往看不起老人的哲学，片面认为他们都是过时的、无用的。其实，一些人生理念如同海盐，再老仍然是一种结晶，并且有海的记忆。

There is a story which goes like this: a wise old man and his villagers were on their way to trade salt for barley, which would sustain them for winter. Day in and day out, they trekked to their destination. One starlit night, they camped in the wild. As their guide, the old man took out three grains of salt and threw them into the campfire, which was a traditional way of forecasting the weather passed on from generation to generation since ancient times. The salt would show signs should the weather change the next day in the mountain. This time, however, the salt lay still in the fire. Considering the sign to be ominous, a dark mood enfolded the old man and he proposed that they depart at day break. A young man in the clan, however, protested against their early departure, insisting that the method the old man used, “forecasting the weather by salt” to be nothing more than a superstition. The fact was, the next afternoon, the weather had a sudden change – a snowstorm came! Only then did the young man realize how wise the old man was.
It is often the case that young people turn up their noses at old men’s philosophies, falsely believing that all old men to be old-fashioned and outdated. In fact, philosophy to the old man is like salt to the sea. His philosophy crystallizes a lifetime of experience, just as the salt preserves the memory of the sea.
