第一次注意上BU是因为和一个同学的谈话。08年初她从Boston city campus visit完就很兴奋的跟我说，她发现BU的伙食是她所有去过大学中最好的。Food这个问题虽然不能算上很大的factor，但足以让我去BU 的website上关注它了。后来research之后，渐渐爱上了这所学校。BU寄来的标志性的红色的官方介绍册也被我立在了桌面上，在之后的3个多月的紧张复习中，每一次低迷或者失败觉得失望时，一抬头看到很大的“Boston University”又会让我重整旗鼓。现在“BU”这个词在我的脑海里已经不是一个学校的名字了，更多的是一个鼓励，一个让我奋斗的目标。BU吸引我的原因最主要是那里的diversity，diverse community and combined cultures from different country. 而当这些diversity 又融入在Boston这个非常具有文化气息和古老的大城市中，会让我有种不得不去探索那里的热情。因为我本身从小是一个很喜欢接受新事物，很享受那种不同事物互相影响但又互相包容的感觉，这也是刺激我16岁就踏上越洋的道路去感受文化碰撞和接触不同人的原因。而BU在我眼里是最理想的继续我的追求的地方，而我的personality也会对BU的diversity再多添一份色彩。

My conversation with one classmate about BU intrigued my interest in it. In early 2008, she told me excitedly that the food in BU is the best among all universities she visited after her Boston city campus visit. Although food is not the most important factor I consider when choosing a university, it urges me to concern BU through its website. I gradually fall in love with BU after enough research. I put the typical official introduction of BU on my desk after it was delivered to me. In the following 3 months, I was busy at reviewing. At sight of “Boston University” , I was soon full of energy and it encouraged me to persist when I was desperate and hopeless. Now for me, BU is not only a name of a university, but also an encouragement and a goal worthy of my efforts. The diversity，diverse community and combined cultures from different countries in BU appeal to me a lot. These diversities of BU integrate with Boston, a big city with a long history and splendid culture, which motivates me to explore it with great passion. I am a person who loves to accept new things and enjoy an atmosphere in which different things interact and accommodate each other. That is why I choose to go abroad to feel culture shock and make friends with different people at the year of 16. BU is an ideal place for me to pursue my dream, and I believe that my personality can help rich the diversity of BU. |

第一次进学校的band队，因为好奇心和热情，我没有选自己最拿手的已经在中国弹了8年的钢琴，而是选择了从来没有接触和了解的trumpet。trumpet里只有单音出现而且才3个按键，本来以为会比钢琴简单很多，但后来发现自己完全错了。第一次拿着mouthpiece 吹时，试了无数次一点声音也没有，只听到吱吱的空气声。当然，第一次并没有怎么打击我的士气，然而之后连续3个星期情况一直不见好转，我开始问自己，是不是自己天生不是这块料，是不是应该drop掉band。Everything has a solution. 这是我一直相信的。因为吹的水平太低了，每次练习都跟其他人分开练，只有我一个人在房间独自练，独自摸索。吹trumpet最讲究的就是如何处理嘴唇和mouthpiece的缝隙，经过无数次的实验，不断的变化嘴唇的tight的程度，然后每当吹出一个像样的音时，就记住刚刚嘴唇的形状和感觉，再一次次练。然而因为只能吹出最基本的五个音，在thanksgiving concert 上只能拿着trumpet在那pretend 吹，只能干看着别人，虽然坐在band里，但交响乐并没有我的声音。从那一刻，我告诉自己不能输在这个上面。又经过两个多月的努力，终于，乐团老师对我说了一句“Xiaotong, that’s amazing! You are able to get a high F that I had practiced for 2 years. But you only used less than 4 months! That’s incredible, I am so surprised.” 在Christmas Concert 上我不再是滥竽充数的了，我可以流畅的跟着老师的指挥吹出曲子。我甚至可以面对几百人在social performance 在auditorium里进行solo。好像美国的每一次经历都在默默的改变着我，这一次，我终于了解，原来相信自己加坚持，就足以带领我走向我要的目标。我知道，无论我未来去了哪里，做什么，这样的信念会一直陪着我。 |

The first time I joined the band in my university, due to curiosity and passion, I chose trumpet which I never practiced before, not piano which I have played for 8 years in China. Trumpet is with only one tone and three keys so that I thought it was much easier to play than piano. But I was proved to be wrong. The first time I played mouthpiece, I heard nothing except some sizzles after having tried a thousand times. Of course, the first failure did not discourage me. However, in the following three weeks, this condition did not change for the better. I begun to question myself whether I had a gift for trumpet, and should I drop the band? Fortunately, I always believe that everything has a solution. Due to my lower-level, I was separated from others. Every time I practiced and felt the recipe alone. The most important recipe in playing trumpet is handling the gap between lips and mouthpiece. After hundred times of practices, changing the tight of lips, I finally could play a pleasant tone. I practiced again and again after I got the shape of lips and feelings with which I played pleasant tones. But that was not enough, I could only play five tones so that I pretended playing in the thanksgiving concert, watching others playing. There is no music from me in the band although I was present there. At that moment, I told myself that I could not fail it. After another two months of practices, one day , my teacher in band told me: “Xiaotong, that’s amazing! You are able to get a high F that I had practiced for 2 years. But you only used less than 4 months! That’s incredible, I am so surprised.” Since then, I was no longer a person who made up the number, but a performer who played pleasant music fluently following the conductor. I could even play solo in social performance held in an auditorium with hundreds of audiences in. It seems that every experience in USA is changing me silently. This time, it occurs to me that confidence and persistence can bring me to my goal. I believe that, wherever I will be, this faith will accompany me forever. |
