The passengers on the bus watched sympathetically as the young woman with the white cane made her way carefully up the steps. She paid the driver and, using her hands to feel the location of the seats, walked down the aisle and found the seat. Then she settled in, placed her briefcase on her lap and rested her cane against her leg.
It had been a year since Susan, thirty-four, became blind. Due to a medical accident she was sightless, and she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to cling to was her husband Mark.
Mark was an Air Force officer and he loved Susan with all of his heart. When she first lost her sight, he watched her sink into despair and was determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence again. Mark’s military background had trained him well to deal with sensitive situations, and yet he knew this was the most difficult battle he would ever face.
Finally, Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? She used to take the bus, but was now too frightened to get around the city by herself. Mark volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
But soon both of them realized that Susan needed to be independent again. Susan had a long life in front of her. She couldn’t always count upon Mark. They came to terms that Mark would ride the bus with Susan each morning and evening until she got the hang of it. And that is exactly what happened.
For two weeks, Mark, military uniform and all, accompanied Susan to and from work each day. He taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment. He helped her befriend the bus drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.
Each morning they made the journey together, and Mark would take a cab back to his office. Although this routine was even more costly and exhausting, Mark knew it was only a matter of time before Susan would be able to ride the bus on her own. He believed in her.
Finally, Susan decided that she was ready to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived. Before she left, she embraced her husband tightly. Her eyes filled with tears of gratitude for his loyalty, his patience, and his love. She said good-bye, and for the first time, they went their separate ways. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better. She was doing it! She was going to work all by herself!
On Friday morning, Susan took the bus to work as usual. As she was paying for her fare to exit the bus, the driver said, “Miss, I sure envy you.” Curious, Susan asked the driver, “You know, every morning for the past week, a fine looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across the corner watching you when you get off the bus. He makes sure you cross the street safely and he watches you until you enter your office building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute and walks away. You are one lucky lady.”
Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. She was lucky, so lucky, for he had given her a gift more powerful than sight, a gift she didn’t need to see to believe — the gift of love that can bring light where there had been darkness.

马克是一名空军军官, 他深爱着苏珊.苏珊失明的头些日子,他眼睁睁地看着苏珊陷入绝望,于是他下定决定要让妻子重新振作起来，恢复自信.马克的军旅生活磨练了他沉着应对各种非常时期的本事,然而他发现这是他有生以来遇到的最艰难的战役.
终于，苏珊觉得自己已经准备好，可以回去工作了，可是她要怎么去呢？以前都是坐公交车去的, 但是现在却连一个人在城市中走动都不敢.于是马克主动提出每天开车送她上班,尽管他们工作在城市截然相反的两头.
但是不久之后,他俩都意识到,苏珊需要学会再次独立, 苏珊还有很长的路要走. 她不能总是指望马克. 他们商量好，马克每天早晚跟在苏珊后面坐公交，直到她可以完全适应.事情就这样开始了.
整整两个星期,马克每天都穿着件军装陪着苏珊上下班.他教她如何凭借其它感官,特别是她的听觉,来判断她所处的位置并适应新的环境.他还帮她和公车司机交好, 让司机能照顾她并给她留个座位.
每天早晨他们一起完成这段公交之旅,之后马克再一个人乘出租车回到自己的办公室.尽管这样走既让人疲惫不堪又开销很大,但是马克知道, 苏珊总会能够独立乘车的,这只是一个时间问题.他相信她可以的
终于, 苏珊觉得自己已经准备好尝试一个人乘车了.星期一的早晨终于到了.临行前,她紧紧地拥抱着自己的丈夫.她的眼眶盈满了感恩的泪水,感谢他的忠诚,感谢她的耐心,感谢他的爱.她向他道了别,然而这却是他们第一次朝着相反的方向走去.星期一,星期二,星期三,星期四……每天进展都很顺利, 苏珊从未感到如此愉快.她真地做到了!她能自己去上班了.
