Ningbo City, where Jiangdong Hi-Tech Park is located, is the middle part of China’s coastline, south flank of prosperous Yangtze River Delta and in the east of Zhejiang Province, bordering on Shanghai and Hangzhou. It is one of the port cities opening up to the outside world, a national historical and cultural city, and a provincial-level city further opening up to the outside world with the same rights as a province in economic planning and management, entitled to formulate local laws and regulations. It covers an area of 9,365 sq.km with a population of 5,460,000, in which the downtown takes up 2,560 sq.km in the area and 2,030,000 in the population.
Jiangdong district, with a population of 330,000, is a key area of Ningbo, the modernized international port city. It covers 37.7 sq.km with the east grand port, Beilun Port in the east, the most prosperous Three-River Joint in the west, Ningbo Science and Technology Park in the north and Ningbo Higher Education Park in the south. According to General City Program of Ningbo, and with quickened pace of the expanding of Ningbo downtown toward east and the construction of new east city proper, Jiangdong district will be built into a center of commerce and trade, exhibition and logistic and administration in Ningbo.

Ningbo has a long history which can be dated back 7000 years. It is the birthplace of Hemudu culture. Ningbo is famous for port. It has been a key port for foreign trade since ancient times.
Today’s Ningbo port is one of the four international transshipment deep-water ports in China. Now it has the shipping links with more than 90 countries and 560 ports in the world. Ningbo has formed a complete industrial structure with electronic information industry, mechanical processing industry, portside grand industry and garments manufacturing industry. It has more than 80,000 enterprises in all. In 2002, Ningbo was evaluated by the United Nations as one of the 25 cities with the biggest developing potential, and as a class-A city for investment in Chinese mainland. Ningbo has long been praised as “the State of Civilization”, owing to its highly developed science and culture, numerous places of interest & cultural heritage, a convenient transportation network of water, land & air, and advanced communication equipment.
