Surely it’s necessary to work hard in studying and reading. You need to study hard to pass an exam, to write an essay or to gain a degree. Tao Yuanming was into reading. But it’s probably difficult for him to take an exam to enter a university or an institute or other exams like TOEFL, if he were born in today’s world. I was worrying if he could pass the political economy and this was due to his attitude that one doesn’t have to comprehend thoroughly something at once.
For a couple of times, I was criticized for being hedonist in reading. I could only submit to this charge then, and I also admitted that I wasn’t working very hard in reading. However, the “happiness in reading” doesn’t necessarily lead to indulging in hedonism. This could only be understood by those who has been there, and is unknown to others.
I’d like to compare reading to visiting people----visiting them invisibly. We don’t have to book an appointment with an admired master or a renowned scholar beforehand, scared of being interrupting. We enter the door by turning the book cover open and find ourselves in the hall by flip through several pages. We could visit the scholar frequently or at any time you wish. If we don’t get it, we could just leave at ease without bidding goodbye or find some writer else to talk to. No matter the host we visit lives at home or abroad, no matter he belongs to the ancient or the modern, no matter what his major is, no matter he preaches stately or talks humorously, we could come near and listen to our hearts content. We could venerably listen to Confucius’s followers relate his words or naughtily ask if born in our age, would the Mencius, whose famous words is “speaking of kindness and justice and nothing more”, be a Marxist scholar? We could abide beside Socrates before his sentence to death, listening his talking with friends; or could we reflect on Stoic Epictetus 's <>. We could be the audience to the history and anecdotes of all the dynasties, or could we get to know the most advanced innovative theory or seemingly striking statement. Anyway, if there is conflicts among your view, you can always withdraw or even close the door with a thump---that is to close the book, and no one will blame you. This is the freedom difficult to gain alongside the world of books!
There is another world in the hanging pot of Mr.Pot. So is a book--- no matter it's of novel, play, biography, travel, diary, essay or poet. There exist another wander land, another heaven and people living in them. We need not rush to somewhere, paying for the ticket to see the duplication or so-called "vivid" substitution. What we need is just to turn over a page of a book and immerse yourself to the real world and see the real characters;in this way, we could enjoy the scene vividly.
Although the ancient described the world of books as immensely vast, but virtually it's right in front of us. This is definitely a comparison out of idealism. There will be no obstruct in this world. The "mega-world" ,which the Buddha used to say, can be regarded as ultra-vast.What about the world of books? Its present, its past, plus its future deserve the title of "all-embracing" and "all-mighty".Luckily, we are able to roam about in this world and pursue knowledge from the saints without experiencing the tiredness of travelling. Don't blame the scholars to be short-sighted, ignoring humanity or not caring about the society! They can gain rich experience, get to know the time and space and various peoples in books.Or at least, by immersing in books, they tend to get rid of some blindness and become more sophisticated.
But it's a pity that we are still the mortal when knocking at the door of the book world, that we don't have wisdom eye as the Buddha who can gain the wisdom accumulated for thousands of years at one glance.Hence, we have to bear in mind Zhuangzi's logion "life is limited while study is limitless". We are ephemeral worms( not the one turned by Sun Wukong's hair) indulging in the world of books, wandering around here and there. When we meet our soul mate, hear the words tugging at our heartstrings,or see the light on a suspending question, we feel like refreshingly woken and gain the ultimate happiness. This happiness is not the same as hedonism, i presume?
